Variegated Peppermint (Mentha piperita 'Variegata')
Variegated Peppermint is a perennial herb that is commonly grown for its edible qualities, although it does have ornamental merits as well. The fragrant pointy green leaves with showy creamy white variegation are usually harvested from late spring to early fall. The leaves have a minty taste. They can be used fresh in recipes or garnishes, or dried for teas and medicinal purposes.
Variegated Peppermint features bold spikes of violet flowers rising above the foliage in mid summer. Its attractive fragrant pointy leaves remain green in color with showy creamy white variegation throughout the season. This plant attracts and supports all kinds of pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects.
This plant is quite ornamental as well as edible, and is as much at home in a landscape or flower garden as it is in a designated herb garden. It does best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Peppermint is hardy to -20 degrees, but mulching in winter helps roots.
Because of the variegation, it does not take over yards!
